Just as one taco restaurant in central Baltimore prepares to open, another has quietly shut down.

San Pablo Street Tacos, which launched in May 2020 at 800 St. Paul St. in Mount Vernon, announced Tuesday via Instagram that it had closed for good.

“After an amazing run, San Pablo Street Tacos is officially closed,” the post reads. “We’re beyond grateful for every order, every smile, and every bit of support from this incredible community. Thank you for making us part of your lives.”

San Pablo Street Tacos did not provide a reason for the closing, and the owners could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

But taco lovers in the neighborhood won’t have to wait long for a new fix.

Chihuahua Brothers, a plant-based taqueria, is relocating to Mid-Town Belvedere at 58 W. Biddle St., just blocks from the former San Pablo Street Tacos location. An opening date has not yet been announced.

“Contractors were rushing and making mistakes, but this isn’t about rushing,” Chihuahua Brothers owner Kevyn Matthews told The Baltimore Sun earlier this month. “It’s about longevity and doing it correctly, which is a reflection on the food itself. You can’t rush perfection.”

The new space will showcase Mexican art and a hand-painted mural by Matthews. Fans can expect the return of signature offerings from the previous location in Abell, including vegan tacos, tamale-burrito hybrids and empanadas.
