The top-ranked Archbishop Spalding softball team won both games at their Cavalier Classic by one run and in eight innings Saturday.

The Cavaliers (5-1-0) beat Bishop McNamara, 5-4, in Game 1 and defeated Urbana, 7-6, in Game 2.

Katie Seidl struck out six against the Mustangs to earn the win and also hit a double. In Game 2, she pitched two-thirds of inning in relief and Mary Sena hit a double and a triple.

No. 4 Arundel 3, Howard 2: The Wildcats scored on a groundout by Caroline Mills in the bottom of the sixth to take the one-run lead.

Arundel held on to secure the victory, thanks to an appeal call in the top of the seventh. It appeared that Shayna Gordon (leadoff double) had tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Rachel Oliver, but Gordon was ruled to have left third base early and called out to end the game.

Howard had taken the early lead with two runs in the top of the first courtesy of a hit by Katie Unkle that scored Gordon (single) and Steph Yarrish (double).

No. 14 Broadneck 2, Reservoir 0: The Bruins scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, and that was all pitcher Ally Thompson needed to hold on for the win.

Mount Hebron 10, St. Mary's-Ryken 5: For the past three years, Dylan Scheeler was a catalyst for the Knights (2-3).

Scheeler, now a senior at Mount Hebron after transferring to the Ellicott City school over the summer, helped his new team defeat his old one, as he scored two goals in a win for the Vikings (3-0) over visiting St.?Mary's-Ryken to capture their own Fight for Five Tournament championship at Blandair Park.

“It was really weird. They were talking me up on the field as much as they could. My cousin's on the team and a lot of people I've been playing with for seven years,” said Scheeler, a Stevenson commit who also scored a game-high five goals to lead Mount Hebron to a 13-4 win against Urbana in a semifinal.

North Carroll 14, Centennial 10: The Panthers opened their season against the visiting Eagles in the first round of the North Carroll tournament, knowing it was most likely the last time they would be hosting a tournament on their home field.

“We started off this year off as the last ride for North Carroll, because we're most likely closing down next year,” Panthers sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Hillman said after the win.

“So I think that getting the opening win really helped start off the season for us, really gets us excited.”
