BREWERS: Manager Craig Counsell said LHP Will Smith would miss “significant time” after tearing a knee ligament while taking off his spikes. Smith, who was to share closer duties with Jeremy Jeffress, was standing on one leg when he lost his balance and twisted the knee. “My knee just went up and popped,” he said. “Everyone tells you there is nothing you can do about it, but you still feel like you are letting people down.”

ROYALS: RHP Edinson Volquez will be the Opening Day starter when the Royals face the Mets in a World Series rematch. Volquez, who went 13-9 with a 3.55 ERA last season, will face Matt Harvey.Ian Kennedy will start the second game and Yordano Ventura the third.

INDIANS: RHP Joba Chamberlain made the team as a nonroster invitee. Manager Terry Francona said Chamberlain would be “a real valuable piece.” In eight innings, he has a 3.18 ERA with seven strikeouts and five walks. LHP Tom Gorzelanny was told he wouldn't would not make the team.
