The Department of Homeland Security has announced the creation of a new app to help manage immigration in the country. It includes a feature allowing migrants to deport themselves.
The Customs and Border Patrol Home app will replace the controversial CBP One app that allowed migrants to request appointments if they lacked the proper documentation to legally enter the U.S. Some Republican lawmakers argued the former app had promoted illegal immigration to the country.
Those using the new CBP Home app can select an option to “submit intent to depart.” This option will walk a user through the process of leaving the country.
“Not only is it safer, but it also saves U.S. taxpayer dollars and valuable Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) resources to focus on dangerous criminal aliens,” a DHS news release said. “This self-deportation functionality is part of a larger $200 million domestic and international ad campaign encouraging illegal aliens to ‘Stay Out and Leave Now.’ ”
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem warned those in the country illegally that her agency will track them down if they refuse to self-deport.
“The Biden administration exploited the CBP One app to allow more than one million aliens to illegally enter the United States,” she said. “With the launching of the CBP Home app, we are restoring integrity to our immigration system.
“The CBP Home app gives aliens the option to leave now and self-deport, so they may still have the opportunity to return legally in the future and live the American dream,” she added. “If they don’t, we will find them, we will deport them, and they will never return.”
Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Texas, in a post on X, described the move as a strong notice to those in the country illegally.
“If you’re in the United States illegally, you are not welcome here,” he said.
