A murder charge was filed in connection with the death of a 23-year-old U.S. Army sergeant in Missouri.

Fort Leonard Wood officials announced the Army Office of Special Trial Counsel filed charges against Specialist Wooster Rancy, 21, in the homicide of Sgt. Sarah Roque.

During a news conference Friday, Maj. Gen. Christopher G. Beck said Rancy is in pretrial confinement ahead of a preliminary hearing. Beck said Rancy and Roque worked in the same battalion.

“As far as other interactions, that is part of the investigation, so that will continue to develop over time,” Beck told reporters.

In addition to the murder charge, Rancy was also charged with obstructing justice.

Roque was reported missing Oct. 21. Her body was found the next day in a trash receptacle on the base near the living quarters for single soldiers.

A memorial ceremony was held in her honor Thursday.

“We appreciate the community’s support to the unit and to her family at this difficult time,” Beck said.

Investigators took Rancy into custody on Oct. 24. He was transferred to the Midwest Joint Regional Confinement Facility at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on Wednesday.

Rancy, originally from North Miami, Florida, serves as a combat engineer with the 509th Clearance Company, 5th Engineer Battalion.

The Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division said the murder remains under investigation.
