Brewers: OF Christian Yelich was scratched from Saturday’s game against the Yankees because of lower back soreness. Yelich was slated to lead off before the two-time All-Star was dropped from the starting lineup about 10 minutes before first pitch. Rookie Sal Frelick replaced the 2018 NL MVP in the leadoff spot for the NL Central-leading Brewers, who won Friday’s opener 8-2. Yelich is batting .274 with 17 homers and 70 RBIs in 136 games this season. He is 2 for 14 on Milwaukee’s trip.

Mariners: RHP George Kirby apologized to manager Scott Servais for saying he wished he wasn’t sent back to the mound for the seventh inning of a 7-4 loss to the Rays after reaching the 90-pitch mark. Servais said he talked with the 25-year-old right-hander “for a long time” both Friday night and Saturday morning. “He said ‘Skip, that’s not who I am,” Servais said before Saturday’s game. “We all know George is a very fiery — he’s a competitor. He’s learning. It’s an opportunity to learn moving forward. The biggest think with George is, we move forward. Love having him out there.”

Blue Jays: George Springer homered twice and drove in four runs and Kevin Gausman struck out 10 over eight sharp innings and the Blue Jays moved a season-best 16 games above .500 by beating the Royals 5-1. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had two hits for the Blue Jays (79-63), who entered in 1 1/2 games ahead of the Rangers for the final AL wild card berth.

Twins: Kyle Farmer went 3 for 4 with a pair of two-out RBIs and Max Kepler added a three-run triple and the AL Central-leading Twins beat the Mets 8-4. Kenta Maeda won for the first time in six starts and Willi Castro went 3 for 4 with a homer as the Twins moved a season-most eight games above the .500 mark. The Twins cut their magic number for clinching the division to 14 with 20 games to go.

Diamondbacks: Tommy Pham hit an RBI single in the 10th inning, and the Diamondbacks beat the Cubs 3-2 for their fourth consecutive victory. Gabriel Moreno scored on a wild pitch before Pham drove in Jordan Lawlar with a liner to left against rookie Daniel Palencia.

Yankees: RHP Luis Severino was placed on the injured list and may have thrown his last pitch for the Yankees. The team said Severino has a left upper-body injury and was awaiting further test results. Severino left his start against the Brewers in the fifth inning Friday night following a leadoff single to Brice Turang on a 92-mph fastball. After throwing his 70th pitch, Severino dropped his glove in front of the mound, doubled over in pain and walked around the mound. The 29-year-old was holding his left side near his oblique and was replaced by Jhony Brito after being checked out by an athletic trainer and manager Aaron Boone. “I feel like somebody shot me. It’s just like a deep sharp pain,” an emotional Severino said while struggling to hold back tears. Eligible for free agency after this season, Severino is 4-8 with an 6.65 ERA.
