Denny’s is joining the list of nationwide chain restaurants charging an egg surcharge in response to the shortage that has caused prices to skyrocket.
The breakfast giant said in a statement it is a fluid situation that leaves individual markets and restaurants responsible for deciding the surcharge price.
“Denny’s remains committed to providing our guests with delicious meals they love at the value they expect,” the statement read. “We do our best to plan ahead with our vendors on items like eggs to minimize the impact market volatility has on our costs and menu pricing.
“However, due to the nationwide egg shortage and increased cost of eggs, some of our restaurant locations will need to temporarily add a surcharge to every meal that includes eggs.”
Waffle House announced earlier this month it would be adding a 50-cent egg surcharge to items on its menu because of soaring prices caused by the bird flu.
Meanwhile, Cracker Barrel has gone in the opposite direction saying it will keep egg prices the same.
The average cost for a dozen eggs hit $4.95 in the U.S. in January, up more than 15% in a single month with an increasing number of farms finding positive bird flu cases, according to the Department of Agriculture.
Nearly 150 million birds have been infected over the last two years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Whenever a bird tests positive for the virus on a poultry farm, the entire flock is slaughtered to minimize its spread.
