The Baltimore Sun has done a fairly reasonable job of expressing reader support for both Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and former Gov. Larry Hogan in the U.S. Senate race (“Hogan or Alsobrooks for president,” Oct. 11). I’ve decided to support Alsobrooks along with Vice President Kamala Harris because she offers the best opportunity for Maryland representation in the Senate.

Many recent opinion pieces in The Sun stress that Hogan is independent and will do what’s right for Maryland. Let’s look at how things might play out for our state under various election outcomes.

A victory for both former President Donald Trump and Hogan would decimate the federal workforce, adversely affecting many employees who live in Maryland and our economy. Hogan has shown his disdain for Trump which would limit his influence in a Trump administration.

Federal support for rebuilding the Francis Scott Key Bridge would be gone, as well as any effort to clean up the Chesapeake Bay.

With Alsobrooks elected alongside Trump, we’d still have to deal with the fact he considers Democratic-leaning states a bigger personal threat than Russian President Vladimir Putin. Alsobrooks might be able to serve as a backstop against Federalist Society judges and Trump’s worst instincts.

However, impeachment for his unconstitutional acts that he’s already threatened would be difficult, and the U.S. Supreme Court has given him a green light to abuse the office again.

Seeing Harris elected alongside a Republican-led Senate with Hogan would ensure that federal judges wouldn’t be promptly confirmed, and her agenda would be blocked. Mitch McConnell will seem like a reasonable leader compared to his successor. And yet he’s the reason Merrick Garland is leading the U.S. Department of Justice rather than sitting on the U.S. Supreme Court, where his nonpartisan, deliberative style would be better appreciated.

If Harris and Alsobrooks both win, this would be the best outcome for our state.

The vice president’s priorities align closely with Maryland voters. She recognizes that a diverse population such as ours is an asset.

And Alsobrooks has been friends with Harris ever since she was inspired to run for office based on the Californian’s success. She would have direct access to the president, a rarity for a junior senator.

And being 15 years younger than Hogan, she’d be able to accrue seniority in the Senate, something that allowed Ben Cardin to masterfully lead the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Hogan tells us that he’ll do what’s best for Maryland. He is a good man, but the brutal truth is his hands would be tied, and he’d be a very ineffective senator for our state. The political landscape dictates that Marylanders vote for what’s best for Maryland, and that’s Harris and Alsobrooks.
