Bryn Mawr grad Feiss scores eight goals to lead Denver women to romp
Brendan Gleason had four goals and Bryan Costabile (Mount Saint Joseph) had three, including his 10th of the season, as No. 11 Notre Dame upset No. 4 Denver, 11-9, in men’s lacrosse Saturday.
The host Fighting Irish (3-1) jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter and led 8-3 at halftime over the Pioneers (4-2). Notre Dame came out of the break and scored two of the first three goals to push its advantage to six goals at 10-4, the biggest lead of the afternoon with nine minutes left in the third quarter.
John Travisano went 9-for-18 in faceoffs against Denver's Trevor Baptiste.
No. 5 Villanova 8, No. 19 Penn 6: Nick Testa made 10 saves and the visiting Wildcats (6-1) held the Quakers (3-3) scoreless in the first half. Villanova went on a 6-0 run in the first half. Penn regrouped and outscored Villanova, 6-2, in the second half.
No. 8 Virginia 15, Stony Brook 14: Michael Kraus had five goals and five assists and the visiting Cavaliers (6-1) outlasted the Seawolves (1-5). Virginia weathered a 6-1 rally by Stony Brook in the fourth quarter. Harrison Matsuoka brought the Seawolves within one with 58 seconds left in the game.
Hofstra 12, No. 9 North Carolina 6: Jack Concannon made nine saves and the host Pride (2-2) held the Tar Heels (6-2) scoreless in the first half. Dylan McIntosh had a hat trick for Hofstra in the upset victory. Hofstra built an 8-0 lead before North Carolina scored with 13 minutes left in the third quarter.
No. 10 Yale 8, Fairfield 3: Conor Mackie won 15 of 15 faceoffs and a second-half offensive surge carried the visiting Bulldogs (4-1) past the Stags (2-5). Yale outscored Fairfield, 6-1, in the second half.
Lehigh 9, No. 12 Army 7:The visiting Mountain Hawks (5-1, 3-0 Patriot League) used a pair of 4-0 runs to get by the Black Knights (4-2, 1-1). Andrew Pettit had a game-high five goals for Lehigh.
Princeton 15, No. 13 Rutgers 14, OT: Austin Sims scored the game-tying goal with 49.7 seconds left and the game-winner with 2:32 left in overtime as the host Tigers (3-2) upset the Scarlet Knights (4-2). Sims finished with five goals, including three in the final eight minutes.
No. 16 Georgetown 12, Hobart 9: Daniel Bucaro scored five goals to lead the host Hoyas (6-0) past the Statesmen (2-4).
Robert Morris 12, No. 18 Marquette 2: The visiting Colonials (4-2) opened with a 7-0 run and cruised past the Golden Eagles (3-2). Alex Heger made 12 saves for Robert Morris.
Cornell 9, No. 20 Penn State 7: Jordan Dowiak had a hat trick and the Big Red (3-2) finished on a 3-0 run to beat the Nittany Lions (4-3) in Sparks.
Women
No. 16 Denver 21, Niagara 10: Julia Feiss (Bryn Mawr) had a game-high eight goals and an assist and Maddie Baum set a school record with 16 draw controls for tthe host Pioneers (4-2).
The Purple Eagles fell to 3-3.
Feiss' eight goals tied a program record last achieved by Karen Morton on March 18, 2009 against Stony Brook, and had only been done three times previously.
Baum's 16 draw controls broke the previously held record of 12, a feat done by Kate Broderick on Feb. 23, 2005 and Kiki Boone on March 10, 2013. Going into the game, the Piedmont, Calif., native had a total of 13 draw controls through the first five games and 17 in her career.
No. 2 Boston College 19, San Diego State 8: Sam Apuzzo scored a game-high six goals and reached 200 career points to lead the visiting Eagles (9-0) past the Aztecs (5-3).
Boston College opened with a 5-0 run and were never threatened. Lauren Daly had a career-high nine saves for the Eagles.
No. 3 James Madison 16, Rutgers 8: Kristen Gaudian had a career-high eight points on five goals and three assists to lead the Dukes (7-0) past the host Scarlet Knights (4-3). James Madison outscored Rutgers, 8-4, in each half.
No. 6 North Carolina 13, No. 7Virginia 9: Marie McCool had a hat trick and a 6-3 run in the second half carried the Tar Heels (4-2, 1-0 ACC) past the host Cavaliers (5-1, 1-1). North Carolina has won 14 of the last 15 games against Virginia.
No. 11 Penn 18, Georgetown 6:Erin Barry and Gabby Rosenzweigh each scored five goals to lead the visiting Quakers (6-0) past the Hoyas (4-2).
No. 12 Northwestern 20, Marquette 9: Taylor Pinzone had a hat trick to lead the host Wildcats (5-2) past the Golden Eagles (4-4).
No. 14 Southern California 14, Arizona State 3: Izzy McMahon had three goals to lead the host Trojans (3-3, 1-0 Pac-12) past the Sun Devils (5-2, 0-1). USC went on an 11-1 run in the first half.
