Blue Jays jolt No. 6 Syracuse as Williams scores 4 goals
Towson men win in OT; Loyola women extend roll
Cole Williams (Loyola Blakefield) scored four goals and No. 17 Johns Hopkins stunned No. 6 Syracuse, 18-7, in men’s lacrosse Saturday.
The visiting Blue Jays (3-2) jumped to a 3-0 lead and when the Orange (3-2) cut the lead to, 3-2, Hopkins went on a 5-0 run.
Eighteen goals are the most the Blue Jays have scored against Syracuse since winning 19-8 in the 2003 NCAA Division I semifinals and tied for the most scored at the Carrier Dome in 1991.
Hopkins had three players with three goals each: Alex Concannon, Kyle Marr and Connor DeSimone.
Towson 7, No. 14 Ohio State 6, OT: Jon Mazza (Calverton) scored the game-winner with 6.7 seconds left in overtime as the visiting Tigers (3-3) upset the Buckeyes (5-2).
Towson was outshot, 40-19. Grant Maloof (South River) scored the game-tying goal with 1:14 left in regulation.
Mt. St. Mary’s 12, Mercer 9: Stephano Mastro had a game-high four goals to lead the host Mount (3-4) past the Bears (2-5). Mount St. Mary’s broke a 4-4 tie with a 5-2 run in the third quarter.
Navy 15, Lafayette 5: The host Mids (4-3, 3-0 Patriot League) toook an 8-1 lead in the first half and rolled past the Leopards (2-5, 0-3). Christian Daniel had five goals and Ryan Kern made five saves for Navy.
UMBC 7, Marist 4: Jack Andrews had a hat trick to lead the host Retrievers (2-3) past the Red Foxes (1-7).
Salisbury 9, Stevenson 7: Garrett Reynolds (Archbishop Curley) scored four of his game-high five goals in the first half to lead the host Sea Gulls (5-2) past the Mustangs (0-3).
Stevenson went on a 3-0 run in the third quarter to tie the score at 7, but Salisbury’s Corey Gwin scored the go-ahead with 9:19 left in the game and Reynolds added his fifth goal with 8:46 left for the final score
Women
No. 18 Loyola Maryland 13, No. 13 Princeton 8: The host Greyhounds (3-2) won their third straight and posted their second upset of the week over a ranked opponent by beating the Tigers (3-2). Loyola was led by Taylor VanThof, Elli Kluegel and Frankie Kamely each with a hat trick.
The Greyhounds previously upset No. 10 Towson, 14-13 in triple overtime, on Wednesday.
VanThof led all players with seven draw controls and Livy Rosenzweig won six to help Loyola to a 15-6 advantage
No. 9 Towson 15, Coastal Carolina 3: Kaitlyn Montalbano scored four goals to lead the host Tigers (4-1) past the Chanticleers (1-4). Towson opened with a 7-0 run and cruised. Kiley Keating made four saves for Towson.
The Tigers outshot Coastal Carolina, 18-7, for a 9-1 halftime lead.
UMBC 16, Duquesne 10: Sara Moeller (St. Paul’s) scored four goals and the visiting Retrievers (6-1) won their third straight, beating the Dukes (1-4). UMBC extende its one-goal halftime lead with a 10-5 run in the second half.
Kelsey Major (Liberty) made 13 saves for the Retrievers.
Johns Hopkins 15, Hofstra 6: Maggie Schneidereith (Towson) scored four goals to lead the host Blue Jays (6-2) past the Pride (3-3). Hopkins extended its two-goal lead with an 8-1 run in the second half.
Salisbury 16, Washington College 4: Gianna Falcone made 11 saves and the visiting Sea Gulls (5-0) shut out the Shorewomen (3-1) in the second half.
Salisbury scored 10 unanswered goals in the second half. Dana King, Taylor Poore and Emma Skoglund each scored three goals for the Sea Gulls.
