Date: June 11

Her story: Katie Fox, 25, was born in Baltimore and grew up in Ellicott City. She is a teacher at Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School in Ellsworth, Maine. Her parents, Christopher and Judy Fox, live in Ellicott City.

His story: Christopher DeVore, 25, was born in Anchorage, Alaska. His family moved to Edgewater when he was 13 years old. He works as a contractor with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. His parents, Jon and Michelle DeVore, live in Edgewater.

Their story: The two met in 2010 while attending the University of Maryland, College Park. They were introduced by a friend who thought they would be a “good match.”

“I was pleasantly surprised,” Christopher recalled. “I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. But I was pretty happy and interested.”

On their first date, they went out with a group of friends.

“It was pretty awkward. ... She was just nervous,” Christopher said, adding that he didn’t know Katie was interested in him until she asked for a hug at the end of the night. “We ended up grabbing lunch together the next day, just the two of us. It was a funny start.”

They hit it off immediately and dated through college and after graduation. They continued a long-distance relationship for a year when Christopher took a job in Greenville, S.C. He returned to Maryland in 2014.

They now live in Blue Hill, Maine.

The proposal: Katie is a lifelong dancer and big fan of Julianne Hough from “Dancing with the Stars.” Christopher knew this, so when Hough and her brother, Derek were touring in summer 2015, Christopher spotted an opportunity for the perfect proposal.

He contacted Hough’s representative about his plan to propose to Katie during the show at Wolf Trap in Virginia. Christopher was surprised when he heard back from the representative that Julianne Hough was happy to be part of the proposal.

Katie, who had no idea this was being planned, was just happy to be going to the performance.

She was shocked when she learned their seats were moved to the third row but had no clue what was coming next.

Hough’s tour manager arranged for Christopher to enter into a dance contest during the concert. When he won the contest, Christopher proposed to Katie on the stage in front of the entire crowd.

“This was much larger scale then I intended,” Christopher said. “The idea how to do it was all theirs. The dance-off was not up my alley.”

Katie’s reaction?

“She was shocked. I was surprised that we kept it a secret as long as I did,” he said. “Our parents were hiding in the audience. They were all pretty excited.”

Venue: About 150 guests attended the wedding and reception at the Cylburn Arboretum in Baltimore.

Flowers and decor: Constance McGunigle of Ellicott City provided the flower arrangements and decor. The colors were blue, pink and green.

Food and dessert: Santoni’s Catering provided the food. The appetizers included bacon-wrapped shrimp, mini crab cakes and brie tartlets. Dinner consisted of fried chicken, pork barbecue, pit beef, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, baked beans and salad. Santoni’s also provided the wedding cake and assorted desserts.

Favors: In lieu of favors, the couple made a donation to the Cylburn Arboretum.

Special touches: Christopher’s grandfather, the Rev. Howard DeVore, traveled from Oregon to perform the wedding ceremony.

Guests played lawn games during the cocktail hour, and golf carts were used to transport people from the garden to the reception site.

The couple spent a week in Quebec City for their honeymoon.
