Oct. 15, 1974: Calvert Hall's soccer team hands Patterson its first defeat in three years, 2-1. Kevin Mulford scores the game-winner as the Cardinals hold Clippers star Sonny Askew scoreless.

Oct. 15, 1969: Earl Monroe (26 points) and Gus Johnson (23 rebounds) lead the Bullets past the Chicago Bulls, 98-93, in their NBA opener at the Civic Center. At halftime, commissioner Walter Kennedy presents coach Gene Shue with a trophy for having won the Eastern Division last season. The trophy falls apart in Shue's hands.

Oct. 11, 1968: The Clippers score five times in the final period and defeat the Hershey Bears, 5-4, in an American Hockey League game at the Civic Center. Willie Marshall gets the winner with two minutes left for the Clippers (2-0).

Oct. 12, 1956: Maryland's John Fritsch uncorks an 88-yard punt — a school record — in the rain in the Terps' 13-6 loss to Miami at the Orange Bowl.

Oct. 11, 1952: The Terps rout previously unbeaten Georgia, 37-0, on the road for their 16th consecutive win. Maryland quarterback Jack Scarbath completes five of six passes for 85 yards and runs for a touchdown.

Oct. 14, 1939: City celebrates its 100th anniversary with a 31-0 football victory over McKinley Tech of Washington at Municipal Stadium.

Oct. 12, 1944: Forward Jack Marin, the Bullets' first-round pick from Duke in 1966. He starred for six seasons before being dealt to the Houston Rockets for superstar Elvin Hayes.
