It just rolls off the tongue doesn’t it? Oh, if only Willie Don were still around to make it happen. (William Donald Schaefer, former mayor and governor) Yes, think big! Reconnect Interstate 695 with more than just a bridge. Replace it with a Skyway. A Skyway that would serve as an amazing gateway to Charm City. A Skyway that would include public access, a pedestrian walkway, bike path, and small areas to gather and look out across the Patapsco River to the Baltimore skyline, Fort McHenry and the Chesapeake Bay. Public access much like what exists on the Golden Gate Bridge outside San Francisco.

Think about it, such a structure could incorporate elements to honor those who lost their lives in the terrible tragedy that occurred on March 27, 2024. From the ashes could rise an incredible structure for all to enjoy. It could also incorporate elements to honor those who gave their lives in the defense of Baltimore in 1814.

The possibilities are endless. Dream hard enough and you can see the structure being used to host the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra every 4th of July in a firework celebration. A structure to couple with an inner harbor that remains a public entity and complements the Skyway.

If you have ever had the pleasure of traversing the Patapsco river on a brilliant sun-filled day, you know what a magnificent sight it is to behold. What a gift to future generations. Such a structure would provide access to everyone. Local citizenry and visitors could immerse themselves in the beauty of the Chesapeake; a Skyway that would allow this national treasure to be shared with the world.

Finally, think of the potential for such a structure to support charitable events. Organized walks across the span to support fundraising to fight cancer or any number of important causes. Special events like the bike race that has occurred in the greater Baltimore area the last few years. The possibilities are endless. Such a structure would be a jewel on the East Coast and potentially attract tourists to the area.

So, to Wes Moore, Andy Harris and all Maryland’s current political leaders, DREAM BIG! Imagine the possibilities in them is a way to truly celebrate and share the history and incredible beauty that exists here in Charm City and Maryland.
