Community leaders in Southeast Baltimore held a safety walk Tuesday, discussing ways to keep their neighborhood safer.

“Sick and tired of foolishness, our people are dying,” resident Kenny Ebron said. “Our people are dying, and nothing is being done about it.”

Residents, Baltimore Police officers, and officials from the Department of Public Works attended the event. Those participating discussed safety tips, recent crime patterns and 311 requests.

This comes in light of a recent string of juvenile crime, including an incident that occurred Tuesday morning. Around 2:30 a.m., police responded to the 1200 block of South Haven Street for a report of a shooting. Police said a 17-year old is in grave condition after pulling a gun on a driver, and gunfire was exchanged.

Leaders of the Southeastern District Police Community Relations Council said the teen was attempting to carjack the driver. Baltimore Police have not confirmed that.

“It’s frustrating because these kids need help, they need rehabilitation, they need some consequences, and they need to be in a system that cares and doesn’t just let them out to do things over and over again” resident Robbe Reddinger said.

Several of the residents at the walk called on city and state leaders to take more action.

“Common sense changes that I think everyone can agree on is what we want to see,” Reddinger said.

“I don’t want to move, this is my favorite place in the world, so I just want to see it be the best it can be,” he added.
