A suspect is in custody after a domestic dispute on New Year’s Eve led to the fatal stabbing of his mother in Pikesville, according to Baltimore County Police on Thursday.
Xander Fried, 21, has been charged with first-degree murder, police said. The victim has been identified as the suspect’s mother, 57-year-old Melanie Fried.
According to charging documents, police responded to the 100 block of Brightside Avenue in Pikesville after a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute between a homeowner and a family member around 1:21 p.m.
The 911 caller stated that “he killed his mother because his mother is a violent person who had been holding a knife,” the charging documents said. When police arrived, they identified Xander Fried as the caller, who again told police he killed his mother.
Police said officers entered the residence and found the victim, Melanie Fried, deceased, “hunched over a chair suffering from multiple stab wounds to her chest and hands.” A knife was observed on the floor, and Xander Fried was placed under arrest.
Xander Fried is being held without bond at the Baltimore County Detention Center.
According to the charging documents, officers found a second person inside the residence at the time of the incident, who was taken to police headquarters and interviewed.
She advised police that she heard Melanie Fried and Xander Fried arguing. She went downstairs and observed her mother “bloody and hunched over a chair.”
Charging documents state that she saw Xander Fried standing near the victim with blood on his clothes.
She said Xander Fried then showered, changed his clothes and called 911.
A search warrant was executed and police found a bloody knife and clothing in the residence.
Xander Fried appeared at a bail hearing Thursday at Towson District Court via video from the Baltimore County Detention Center. The hearing was postponed until Friday after he asked for a public defender, saying he did not know his Social Security number and was unable to complete the necessary paperwork.
