One person is dead and three people, including a Maryland State Police trooper, were injured in a five-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 early Sunday morning.
According to state police, the crash occurred around 2:02 a.m. in the area of southbound I-95, north of Maryland 100 in Howard County, when an on-duty state trooper’s unmarked vehicle was struck.
A preliminary investigation discovered that the trooper was inside his stationary vehicle on the left shoulder of the roadway at the time. Police said that for unknown reasons, the trooper was struck by a Jeep Cherokee, causing the Jeep to travel back into the roadway, where it was then hit by a GMC pickup truck, a Lincoln SUV and a Volkswagen passenger vehicle.
According to a news release, the driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services. A passenger in that car and the trooper were transported to Shock Trauma in Baltimore for treatment.
Police said the trooper has since been released.
The driver of the GMC was also taken to the hospital, and the driver of the Volkswagen was placed under arrest and charged with suspicion of driving under the influence, police said.
Lanes were closed for approximately four hours but have since reopened, according to police. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
The identification of the Jeep Cherokee driver is pending next-of-kin notification.
