The two men who were killed in a car crash following a vehicular pursuit in South Baltimore have been identified by the Maryland attorney general’s Independent Investigations Division.

According to a statement released Friday, Maryland Transportation Authority Officer Jamal Cofield, who has been with the department for 11 months, was attempting to perform a traffic stop of a vehicle on northbound Interstate 95, early Wednesday morning.

The vehicle he was attempting to stop exited I-95 at Key Highway, then sped up and crashed into a pillar underneath the highway on East McComas Street, killing 20-year-old Gabriel Castillo and 22-year-old Ezequiel Eduardo Garcia-Chicas, both of Hyattsville, according to investigators. Cofield was not injured, according to the release. The IID and Maryland State Police Crash Team are investigating the incident.
