The Penguins acquired veteran defenseman Ron Hainsey from the Hurricanes for minor-league forward Danny Kristo and a draft pick.

The move was made to address the Penguins’ depleted defensive unit because Trevor Daley will be lost for six weeks after having arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

Hainsey, 35, has played in 891 regular-season games in his 14-year career but has never played in the playoffs. That figures to change now: He leaves the Hurricanes, with the worst record in the East, for last year’s Stanley Cup champs.

Sean Monahan scored his 100th NHL goal in the Flames’ 3-2 win over the Lightning. ... Thomas Greiss made 24 saves in his third shutout of the season to lead the Islanders past the Canadiens 3-0. ...
