LeBron James wanted a playmaker to help the Cavaliers’ second unit. Deron Williams is ready to be that guy.

The Mavericks waived the five-time All-Star guard Thursday, and he is now looking to join the Cavaliers. Williams, who is averaging 13.1 points and 6.9 assists, has to clear waivers before he can sign with the Cavs.

Williams has dealt with ankle injuries and recently missed eight games with a sprained big toe on his left foot, but he played in the final three games before the break.

The Mavs also traded Justin Anderson, Andrew Bogut and a conditional first-round pick to the 76ers for Nerlens Noel.
