Anne Marie Lundquist, a paralegal who wrote community news for the Maryland Gazette, died Dec. 16 of injuries sustained in an accidental fire at her Linthicum Heights home. She was 86.
Born Holly Hock in Chicago, she was the daughter of John Hock, an artist, and his wife, Mary Frances Drinkpohl. She later changed her name to Anne Marie.
She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree at Northwestern University, where she also received a master’s degree in music and trained as a concert pianist. She later earned a second master’s degree in legal studies at the University of Baltimore.
She met her future husband, August Luther Lundquist, who was then a Navy lieutenant, while she was a student at Northwestern.
Mrs. Lundquist taught music in Georgia and moved to Anne Arundel County when her husband began teaching at Brooklyn Park High School.
She began writing the Linthicum news column for the The Maryland Gazette. Among her articles was a profile of Christine Sarbanes, the wife of former U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes.
She later became a paralegal and worked for a downtown Baltimore law firm. She retired in 1998.
“My mother never drove,” said her daughter, Christine Lundquist Fillat of Pasadena. “She used the MTA’s buses for her trips to Harundale Mall and downtown to Howard Street to visit her beloved Hoshchild Kohn department store. She later took light rail and haunted the streets of Baltimore.”
“She traveled to Europe regularly and loved anything by the Impressionist painters. She also visited whatever hot exhibit would be in New York,” her daughter said. “She loved the Baltimore Opera and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.”
She took cooking lessons from Donna Crivello and enjoyed making Southern Italian dishes. She marched in peace rallies and women’s rights marches in Washington.
Her husband of 44 years, a teacher who was also a Glen Burnie lawyer, died in 1996.
Following her injuries from the fire, she resided for a time at Morning Rainbow Assisted Living in Pasadena.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Holly Run Chapel at the Linthicum United Methodist Church, School Lane in Linthicum.
In addition to her daughter, survivors include three sons, Eric Lundquist of Waukesha, Wis., Arthur Lundquist of New York City and John Lundquist of Baltimore; and five grandchildren.
