A Maryland state trooper was injured early Saturday morning when a Tesla collided with his patrol vehicle during a crash investigation on the Capital Beltway.

According to state police, the trooper — assigned to the College Park Barrack — was inside his marked patrol vehicle on the inner loop of Interstate 495 near Greenbelt Road around 2:44 a.m. when the crash occurred.

His vehicle had its emergency lights activated at the time, officials noted.

Investigators said a Tesla, driven by a 34-year-old, of Hanover, struck the rear of the patrol car while the trooper was conducting a crash investigation.

Impairment is being considered a possible factor in the crash, authorities said.

The trooper was transported by ambulance to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, from which he was later released.

The driver of the Tesla was taken to Luminis Health Doctors Community Medical Center in Seabrook for treatment.

The Maryland State Police College Park Barrack is leading the investigation. Charges are pending consultation with the Office of the state’s attorney in Prince George’s County.
