Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., has announced a new bill aimed at cracking down on states that provide driver’s licenses to noncitizens.
The Red Light Act, if passed, would withhold federal transportation funding from states that enact laws providing licenses or identification cards to illegal migrants. Under the bill, the U.S. Department of Transportation would revoke such a state’s entire share of “specific federal highway funds,” according to a statement Tuesday from Tenney.
One state with such a law is New York. The Empire State’s 2019 Green Light Law allowed anyone over 16 to apply for a license regardless of citizenship status.
“Our nation is grappling with an unprecedented migrant crisis, yet some states, like New York, are incentivizing and rewarding criminals with driver’s licenses and identification cards,” Tenney wrote. “In New York, the Green Light Law has given licenses to illegal immigrants, allowing these dangerous individuals to roam freely in our country, brutally attacking, raping, and murdering members of our community.
“In addition, this law also restricts law enforcement from accessing DMV records, preventing the enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws. This legislation ensures states that refuse to comply with our nation’s immigration policies are not rewarded with federal funding.”
President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming border czar, Tom Homan, on Monday suggested vehicles with New York license plates should be blocked from entering the U.S. via the Canadian border unless the state repeals the Green Light law.
“To me, this is a high priority,” Homan said of the proposal in an interview with the Buffalo News. “I grew up in New York state, I still own a home in the state. What happens in New York means a lot to me.”
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said during an unrelated news conferenceHoman’s idea seemed nonsensical.
“That would be bizarre to me, that anyone thinks that stopping our vehicles from coming in and out of our country, keeping New Yorkers in a foreign country, is a smart path forward,” she said. “I’d like to sit down and have that conversation.”
Homan on Sunday issued a stern warning to migrants illegally entering the U.S. in the final days of the Biden administration, telling them “you are going home.” The incoming Trump administration, he added, will conduct the “biggest border operation this country has ever seen.”
