Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lashed out over President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion of a “merged” U.S. and Canada.
Trudeau announced Monday he intends to resign as prime minister and leader of the country’s Liberal Party. The decision followed Trump’s threat to place a 25% tariff on Canadian goods unless the country secured its border with the U.S.
Trump responded to Trudeau’s announcement by referring to Canada as the “51st State” via Truth Social. He also floated the idea of Canada joining the U.S., saying such a move would help Canada defend itself.
“If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them,” the president-elect said. “Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”
Trudeau fired back via X on Tuesday and decried Trump’s proposal.
“There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States,” he wrote. “Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s biggest trading and security partner.”
Trudeau’s resignation announcement was widely mocked online, including by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga.
“President Trump has liberated Canada after trolling Trudeau by calling him Governor of Canada,” she wrote via X. “After tyrannical Covid abuse, destroying free speech, importing military aged male ‘refugees’, and being Zelensky’s biggest cheerleader, Trudeau RESIGNS! [sic]”
Trudeau said Monday he will stay in his role until his successor is selected. The Canadian Parliament will be paused until then and resume in late March, according to the prime minister.
