The U.S. Marshals Service has joined the search for a father facing an attempted murder charge.

Tony Duane Harper, 34, is accused of firing a gun into a car during a custody exchange on Sept. 17.

According to charging documents, a woman called 911 just after 7 p.m. and reported the father of her friend’s child had just shot into her car.

The mother of the child had returned to Harper’s location to retrieve their child due to an earlier argument, court documents read. Harper opened the door and handed over the child.

The narrative then takes a violent turn, documents say.

According to the statement of charges, Harper leaned in toward the mother of his child as if he was going to hug her, but instead pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots into her friend’s vehicle with the friend sitting in the passenger seat. The women reported Harper then fled the scene.

Officers responded and noted three bullet holes were found in the driver’s side door.

Online records show Harper has had four domestic violence protective orders and one peace order filed against him from 2011 to 2015. But records show all of those orders were eventually dismissed, including one due to the petitioner failing to appear.

Court records also show Harper was on probation at the time of this reported shooting for a 2021 2nd-degree assault. This recent shooting, if proved, would be a violation of his supervised release.

“Harper now has two outstanding warrants for his arrest,” said Al Maresca, deputy marshal with the Marshals Service. “One warrant is for violating the terms of his probation, and now there’s a warrant for this attempted murder case.”

Other documented arrests listed on Maryland Case Search include a misdemeanor drug possession in 2018, destruction of property in 2011 and an armed robbery in 2007. Harper was just 16 years old at the time of the reported armed robbery.

Harper is now 34 and facing nine criminal counts including attempted first-degree murder. He stands at approximately 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs about 160 lbs.
