The mother of a 5-year-old girl who was found unresponsive, with “ice cold” hands, in a bedroom in East Baltimore earlier this week is due in court Friday.

The girl’s parents Bernice and Gerald Boyd face criminal charges of child abuse and neglect, including child abuse that resulted in the death of a child.

Gerald Boyd, 34, was ordered held without bond Wednesday, Baltimore City State’s Attorney spokeswoman Emily Witty said. The bail review for Bernice, 32, is Friday, according to Witty. No attorneys were listed for them in court records.

Police charging documents in the criminal case say the 5-year-old girl was “severely emaciated” and “extremely malnourished,” with visible ribs. She was pronounced dead by a paramedic, and a homicide investigation was launched.

During police questioning, neither Bernice nor Gerald Boyd took responsibility for feeding their daughter, Zona, or could say when or what she was last fed. Her father said Zona and her 6-year-old brother had gone through the garbage seeking nourishment.

A subsequent search of the home, however, found a freezer packed with meat and a locked bedroom closet stocked with non-perishable food items, out of the children’s reach.

Police say neither parent provided “adequate nutrition” for Zona or her brother, despite “their ability to do so based on the presence of food in the freezer and the locked closet in the bedroom.”

The 6-year-old boy also was severely malnourished, according to the court records. When police found him in the house, he could “barely stand or walk.” He was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he reportedly weighed only 35 pounds. The parents’ child abuse and neglect charges pertain to both children, charging documents reflect.

The girl’s parents told police that Zona and her brother had “some sort of disagreement” the Friday before, the same day that Bernice said Zona had complained of a headache.

Both Bernice and Gerald Byrd said the 6-year-old boy had slept in the room he shared with his sister over the weekend.

“He never mentioned to his parents that the deceased victim, Zona, had not moved,” the charging documents said. “Neither parent could advise of the last time they saw the deceased victim alive.”
