A former official fired by Colorado school district last month was found dead Wednesday in Maryland amid allegations he was involved in possessing “child sexual assault material,” authorities told FOX45 News on Thursday.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Maryland notified Colorado officials on Wednesday it was conducting a death investigation into David Weiss, former chief of schools at Jeffco Public Schools.

The Jefferson County, Colorado Sheriff’s Office recently opened an investigation into allegations Weiss was involved in possessing “child sexual assault material.” The office said its investigation will continue.

Weiss was in Maryland with family to celebrate the holidays at the time of his death, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said an autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death.

Jeffco Public Schools did not immediately respond to a request for information about Weiss’s termination. The district told 9News Denver last month that authorities had directed them not to share details about the matter.

The chief of schools position at Jeffco Public Schools leads the district’s department of school leadership, according to 9News. The position reportedly involves overseeing student achievement and school effectiveness. Jeffco Public Schools has 155 schools, 84 of which are elementary schools, according to the district’s website. The district’s student enrollment was 77,092 as of the 2022-23 academic year.
