A birthday celebration ended with one woman in the hospital and a man now accused of rape, according to court documents.
James Curry Mitchell, 33, of Baltimore, is wanted on more than a half-dozen charges, including first-degree rape.
According to court documents, officers responded to Mercy Hospital on August 15, 2020, about a reported rape. A woman told investigators after a night of celebrating her birthday, she was attacked and robbed while at a bus stop near the corner of North Howard and West Centre streets in the city’s central district, according to the statement of charges.
The woman detailed the attack saying the suspect “approached her, grabbed her purse off of her shoulder at the same time grabbing her hair which caused her to fall and caused an abrasion to her upper lip.”
After the suspect fled the scene with her cellphone and approximately $300 in cash, the woman told police a second suspect appeared and helped her off of the ground.
The woman told investigators she blacked out after the encounter and woke up in her bed wearing a T-shirt that did not belong to her and in pain, according to charging documents.
After reporting the incident, she was transported to the hospital and given an exam provided to survivors of unwanted sexual contact.
Nearly a year later, police were notified of a forensic match and detailed Mitchell’s DNA was located on jeans belonging to the woman, according to court documents. The statement of charges goes on to detail that the woman then identified Mitchell in a photo array as the suspect who took her property but does not remember the sexual assault.
A warrant was issued for Mitchell’s arrest on charges including first-degree rape.
Since the warrant was issued, court records show Mitchell failed to appear for a paternity hearing involving another female.
The U.S. Marshals Service has now joined the search for Mitchell.
“We’re hoping someone will be able to identify Mitchell and tell us exactly where he is,” said Al Maresca of the U.S. Marshals Service.
Mitchell is described as standing at approximately 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing about 145 pounds.
Anyone with information concerning his whereabouts is asked to contact the U.S. Marshals Service at 202-819-5058.
