The Chiefs blocked Broncos Wil Lutz’s 35-yard field goal attempt as time expired on Sunday, and two-time defending Super Bowl champs escaped with a 16-14 win over the visiting Broncos to extend their winning streak to 15 games dating to last season.
The Chiefs had taken the lead on Harrison Butker’s field goal with 5:57 remaining, but rookie QB Bo Nix and the Broncos converted on a trio of third downs while marching back down field. They proceeded to set up Lutz for the winner, but Leo Chenal got his hand on the kick.
Patrick Mahomes finished with 266 yards passing and a TD for the Chiefs (9-0), who became only the fifth team to follow up a Super Bowl triumph by winning their first nine games. That also matches the best start to a season in franchise history.
Nix, the No. 12 overall pick in the drafy, had 215 yards passing and two TDs for the Broncos (5-5).
Bills 30, Colts 20: Taron Johnson returned Joe Flacco’s first pass 23 yards for a score, and Josh Allen and James Cook each scored on TD runs to lead the AFC East-leading Bills to the win. The Bills extended their win streak to five with their first victory in Indianapolis since 1998. Flacco had four turnovers — three INTs and a fumble.
Vikings 12, Jaguars 7: The Vikings held the Jags to 143 yards and overcame Sam Darnold’s three INTs to earn the road win. John Parker Romo’s fourth FG late in his NFL debut proved the game-winning score.
Panthers 20, Giants 17: Eddy Pineiro kicked a 36-yard FG in OT and the Panthers made it back-to-back wins for the first time this year. The game was played in Munich.
Patriots 19, Bears 3: Drake Maye got the better of Caleb Williams in a matchup of first-round pick QBs and the Patriots won on the road. The Pats defense sacked Williams nine times.
Saints 20, Falcons 17: Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught three passes for 109 yards and two TDs in his second game for Saints, who began Darren Rizzi’s tenure as interim coach by snapping a seven-game skid. The visiting Falcons had three failed FGs.
49ers 23, Buccaneers 20: Jake Moody redeemed himself after missing three FGs by making a 44-yarder as time expired to give the the 49ers the road win.
Cardinals 31, Jets 6: Kyler Murray threw for 266 yards and a TD and ran for two scores and the host Cardinals cruised to their fourth straight win. The Jets have lost six of seven.
Chargers 27, Titans 17: Justin Herbert threw for a TD and ran for one as the host Chargers pulled away to win their third straight.
Eagles 34, Cowboys 6: Jalen Hurts threw a pair of TD passes and ran for two scores, and the Eagles rolled on the road. It was the fifth straight victory for the Eagles, who moved atop the NFC East. The Cowboys were without injured starting QB Dak Prescott.
