Louis J. Akers Jr., a retired investment banker, died Dec. 1 of complications following an organ transplant at Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va.

He was 65 and lived in Huntington.

Born in Dundalk, he was the son of Louis Joseph Akers Sr., a State of Maryland construction superintendent, and Marie Klasen, a homemaker.

He was a 1969 graduate of Dundalk High School and attended Frostburg University.

He became a retail securities broker and went on to serve as vice chairman of the board of directors of Ferris, Baker Watts in downtown Baltimore, a post he held from late 2001 to June 2007. He had earlier been the firm's chief executive officer.

He lived for many years in Reisterstown and moved to West Virginia about a decade ago.

Mr. Akers sat on the boards of directors of Champion Industries Inc. and Portec Rail Products Inc. He was also a past president of Metrec of West Virginia.

He was a past member of the Greater Baltimore Alliance. He was also a fan and benefactor of the Hereford High School football team. He enjoyed freshwater fishing and spending time at his mountain house.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. George's & St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 2900 Dunleer Road in Dundalk.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Bostic-Akers; a son, Joe Akers of Huntington; two sisters, Andrea Akers of Pasadena and Candace Herbster of Dundalk; a stepdaughter, Kelly McCoy of Huntington; and nieces and nephews. His marriage to Evie Lee Newell ended in divorce.
