President-elect Donald Trump offered House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, his “complete” endorsement Monday, just days before the chamber is set to vote on its next speaker.

The 119th Congress begins its first session Friday, and Republicans will control the House and Senate. Johnson’s future grew uncertain in recent weeks after he received heavy GOP criticism for his handling of a temporary funding measure to avoid a government shutdown.

Trump earlier this month condemned an initial bipartisan spending plan backed by Johnson, urging Congress to approve a plan “without Democrat giveaways.” However, he told Fox News that Johnson could “easily” maintain his leadership role by acting “decisively” and “tough.”

With a temporary measure now approved, Trump called via Truth Social Monday for Johnson to continue leading the House.

“Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard working, religious man,” Trump wrote. “He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement [sic].”

The president-elect added that Americans need “immediate relief” from the “destructive policies” of the Biden administration, suggesting Johnson can help accomplish that.

“We are the Party of COMMON SENSE, a primary reason that we WON, in a landslide, the magnificent and historic Presidential Election of 2024 [sic],” Trump said.

“LETS NOT BLOW THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY WHICH WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN [sic],” he added.

Johnson thanked the president-elect via X, saying he is “humbled and honored” by the support.

“Together, we will quickly deliver on your America First agenda and usher in the new golden age of America,” the speaker wrote to Trump. “The American people demand and deserve that we waste no time.”

It is not immediately clear what level of GOP support Johnson will receive. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., said ahead of the final spending plan being approved that the speaker would not receive his vote.

“He doesn’t have my vote and I think he’s losing political capital by the second here,” Massie told Spectrum News Louisville.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who will not vote for House speaker, floated Elon Musk this month as a possible replacement for Johnson. Musk, who helped fuel some of the recent criticism of the speaker, is set to co-head the new Department of Government Efficiency alongside Vivek Ramaswamy.

“Nothing would disrupt the swamp more than electing Elon Musk … think about it … nothing’s impossible,” Paul wrote via X. “(not to mention the joy at seeing the collective establishment, aka ‘uniparty,’ lose their ever-lovin’ minds).”
