A Democratic congresswoman has slammed her party for being “stuck” in “old ways,” referencing the recent race to become the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee in doing so.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, discussed the outcome of the race on Saturday during an appearance on MSNBC. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., who is 35, was bested by 74-year-old Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va. for the role earlier this month.
Connolly’s win followed former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., attempting to use her influence within the Democratic Party to sway lawmakers away from Ocasio-Cortez, Punchbowl News reported.
Crockett, who serves on the House Oversight Committee, expressed frustration with the outcome despite acknowledging Connolly and Ocasio-Cortez are qualified for the role.
“While I think that both are absolutely qualified, I do think that within the Democratic Caucus, we are really stuck in our old ways of doing things, which is: You get there by seniority,” the congresswoman said. “And so, if you’ve been there longer, then you get the post, and I don’t think that we fully sit there and say, ‘who may be best equipped for this moment?’ “
Crockett asserted the House Oversight Committee will be “great” with Connolly in the leadership role. However, when asked whether Ocasio-Cortez was treated “fairly” during the process, the Texas congresswoman responded, “it depends on how you define fairly.”
“I think that America is looking at us and saying ‘wait a minute, we lost the election and we know that the Senate lost seats … we’re looking towards y’all to show us that you’re willing to shake it up if it means that we can move this country forward,’ ” Crockett said.
The remarks follow outgoing Rep. Annie Kuster, D-N.H., telling The Boston Globe on Thursday she is retiring in hopes of setting a “better example.”
“I think there are colleagues — and some of whom are still very successful and very productive — but others who just stay forever,” the 68-year-old congresswoman said.
President-elect Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social following the outcome of the House Oversight Committee race that Ocasio-Cortez should “keep trying,” noting “someday, she will be successful.”
“Damn you know it’s bad when even Trump is feeling bad for me,” Ocasio-Cortez responded via X, adding a laughing emoji.
