Loyola women win in front of empty stands
The Loyola Maryland women’s basketball team won just its third game of the season but the Greyhounds didn’t have an audience on hand to witness the finish of the event.
Junior Hannah Niles led Loyola with a season-high of 17 points in Loyola’s 70-51 win against Army West Point on Women In Sports Day at Reitz Arena on Saturday.
The game finished without any fans in attendance after a fire-alarm signal caused the evacuation of the arena at halftime.
“There was a maintenance issue in the building that Reitz Arena adjoins,” Loyola athletics spokesman Ryan Eigenbrode said. “We could only have a reduced capacity in the arena, so the decision was made to clear the stands after a lengthy delay and continue playing the game.”
Sophomore Delaney Connolly grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and was one of four Greyhounds to have double figures in scoring, with 11. Junior Stephanie Karcz had 16 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Taleah Dixon had 15 points. Madison Hovren led Army West Point with 17 points and seven rebounds.
Harrison went 8-of-16 from beyond the arc for a team-high 24 points, while also adding six rebounds and three assists. Her eight 3-pointers tied Myriam Baccouche and Dominique Mazzuchi for most in a game in program history. Mazzuchi was the last player to accomplish the feat, as she drained eight against Quinnipiac in 2007.
Rebecca Lee chipped in with her third career double double with 16 points and 10 boards for the Mount, and Jatarrikah Settle registered eight points and six rebounds.
