North Carolina men’s lacrosse team scored the first six goals of the game Saturday afternoon and eased to a 20-9 victory over Mercer at Centennial High School Football Stadium in Roswell, Ga. A crowd of 1,022 watched the season opener for both teams.

Seven players had multiple goals for the Tar Heels and three had multiple assists. Junior midfielder Justin Anderson led the way with a hat trick, while junior midfielder Tanner Cook had two goals and a career-high three assists. Senior midfielder Timmy Kelly (Calvert Hall) had two goals and two assists for the Tar Heels as did junior midfielder William Perry.

A pair of freshman attackmen, Jacob Kelly (Calvert Hall) and Nicky Solomon, had two goals and an assist for the Heels. Senior attackman Andy Matthews also had two goals and an assist.

UNC defensemen Evan Egan and Jack Rowlett had single goals and the other goals came from Alex Trippi, Matt Gavin and Henry Schertzinger.

The Bears were led by Will McCarthy’s hat trick while Pascal Coombs had two goals. Three Mercer players — Sean Goldsmith, Michael Quinn and Mikey Ewing — had a goal and an assist in the encounter.

Penn State 17, Villanova 7: Grant Ament had three goals and seven assists to pace the Nittany Lions in their opener. Penn State dominated possession by winning 17 of 27 faceoffs.

Eleven players scored for Penn State, including three goals each from TJ Malone and Dylan Foulds.

Jimmy Gabrielsen scored twice for Villanova and Colby Kneese made 19 saves for Penn State.

No. 13 Lehigh 15, NJIT 8: The Mountain Hawks scored the first four goals, downing NJIT in their season opener. Lehigh's starting attack and midfield combined for 11 goals, while its starting defensemen picked up 17 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers.

Senior Lucas Spence had two goals and a career-high four assists for Lehigh, while classmates Tristan Rai and Mickey Fitzpatrick each had two goals and an assist. Junior
