MIAMI — Edinson Volquez threw the sixth no-hitter in Marlins history Saturday, facing the minimum 27 batters and beating the Diamondbacks 3-0.

Volquez (2-7) struck out 10, and the two baserunners who reached on walks were erased by double plays. He needed 98 pitches, the last of those striking out pinch hitter Chris Owings to complete the masterpiece.

It’s the first no-hitter in the majors this season and the first time the Diamondbacks were no-hit since the Marlins’ Anibal Sanchez threw one Sept. 6, 2006.

Volquez was nearly knocked out of the game after only three pitches. He collided with Diamondbacks leadoff man Rey Fuentes as he covered first base and rolled his ankle.

“I thought I broke my ankle,” Volquez kidded after the game.

The 33-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic stayed in and wound up throwing the game of his life.

Volquez was one of the pitchers the Marlins brought in during the offseason to help fill the void caused by the death of ace Jose Fernandez, who died in a boat crash last September. Volquez’s first season in Miami started about as badly as possible — the Marlins lost eight of his first nine starts and Volquez dropped his first seven decisions.

Tied for the major-league lead in losses going into Saturday, he was nearly perfect.

Volquez threw a one-hitter for the Padres against the Astros on July 19, 2012 — the only blemish that night coming on a fourth-inning infield single by Matt Downs.

Volquez also flirted with a no-hitter in 2014 while pitching for the Pirates. That bid was ended by the Reds’ Devin Mesoraco, who hit a leadoff single in the seventh inning.
