Nine days into the new year, Baltimore has recorded its first homicide investigation of 2025, launching an inquiry into a man who died after a shooting in the northeastern Cedonia neighborhood.

When Baltimore police officers arrived at the 5900 block of Daywalt Avenue around 3:10 p.m. on Thursday, they found a 36-year-old man suffering from multiple apparent gunshot wounds.

Medics pronounced the man dead at the scene, according to a police statement.

By this time last year, Baltimore police were investigating two homicides, according to an earlier statement Thursday.

The city is also investigating fewer non-fatal shooting incidents than it was on Jan. 9, 2024.

According to data on Open Baltimore and The Baltimore Sun’s homicides database, it’s the latest in a year the city has recorded its first homicide since at least 2006.

From 2007 through last year, the latest on record was Jan. 3, which most recently happened in 2015.
