President-elect Donald Trump addressed his viral moment with former President Barack Obama at the late Jimmy Carter’s funeral on Thursday, saying the interaction looked “friendly.”

“It did look very friendly, I must say,” Trump told Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy Friday at Mar-a-Lago, before meeting with Republican governors.

“I didn’t realize how friendly it looked … I said, ‘Boy, they look like two people that like each other.’ And we probably do,” Trump added.

While Trump did not elaborate on what he and Obama discussed, the shared smiles and laughs were a surprise, given that the two former presidents have long been political adversaries.

During Obama’s first term, Trump was a leading proponent of the “birther” theory, which insisted Obama had not been born in the United States and was thus ineligible for the presidency. The animosity led to Obama roasting Trump at the now-infamous 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, an event some have credited with inspiring Trump to later run for president himself.

Accompanied by wife Melania at Carter’s funeral, Trump was ignored by former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, as well as former Second Lady Karen Pence — perhaps a result of the rhetoric she felt he incited against her husband, Mike Pence, during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Trump shared an awkward handshake with his former vice president, who briefly ran against him in the 2024 primary and did not endorse his re-election bid.

As usual, Obama was friendly with Bush — and his wife Laura — at the funeral. Obama’s wife, Michelle, did not attend Carter’s funeral due to a scheduling conflict.
