No. 1 Terps beat Tar Heels, stay undefeated
UMBC, Navy win; Virginia surprises No. 3 Penn State
Megan Whittle (McDonogh) scored four goals as the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team (3-0) beat No. 5 host North Carolina, 8-7, on Saturday.
“I think today was quite a defensive battle on both sides,” Maryland coach Cathy Reese said. “I thought our defense played well. I think we had a great first half; Megan Taylor did a great job in goal for us today and made some great saves. Carolina's defense played well and made it hard for us to find looks on goal. I think that's why we saw a low-scoring game from two of the most powerful offenses.”
Three of Whittle's goals came in the second half as the Tar Heels (3-2) challenged the Terps and tied the game three times. Taylor Cummings (McDonogh) added two goals while Caroline Steele (Severn) and Kacie Longo (South River) each scored once.
In her second career start, freshman Taylor (Glenelg) made eight saves and scooped one ground ball.
Carolyn Jamison (Westminster), Sam Nolan (Fallston) and Caroline Haggerty (John Carroll) each scored three goals in the Retrievers' victory. Jamison has scored multiple goals in every game this season, racking up a team-high 13; this was her third consecutive game with three or more goals.
Navy was led by Julia Collins (River Hill) with four goals and three goals each by Jenna Collins (River Hill), Morgan Young (Towson) and Codi Mullen.
