RANGERS: Prince Fielder returned to Texas from Goodyear, Ariz., to take part in a sleep study after having trouble getting rest during spring training. The study is supposed to last 48 hours. Fielder is expected back in camp by the weekend. Fielder, a 1B and DH, had been having problems sleeping since arriving at camp.

CARDINALS: Seven-time All-Star C Yadier Molina made his spring training debut behind the plate in Jupiter, Fla. Molina wore a splint to protect his surgically repaired thumb and played three innings, but didn't bat after being listed ninth in the lineup. Molina was coming off two thumb operations and wore a splint.

A'S: Sonny Gray pitched three innings in his first start of the spring and then was named opening-day starter after the A's hammered the White Sox 12-3 in Glendale, Ariz. Manager Bob Melvin said Gray will pitch the opener April 4 against the White Sox, likely against All-Star Chris Sale.

ROYALS: Alex Gordon went 4-for-4 with a home run and a Royals split squad beat the Brewers 7-5 in Surprise, Ariz. A day after a swarm of bees caused a delay in the middle of the Rockies-Royals game at Surprise Stadium, some of the insects buzzed the ballpark about an hour before the first pitch. They soon flew away and there were no problems.

EXTRA INNINGS: Giants newcomer Johnny Cueto gave up five runs over 11/3 innings of his spring debut, and Carlos Gonzalez homered to help the Rockies beat the Giants 8-6 in Scottsdale, Ariz. Cueto, who left the World Series champion Royals and signed a six-year, $130 million free-agent deal, faced nine batters and recorded four outs. ... NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta struck out four in two perfect innings of his spring debut as the Cubs lost to the Indians 5-3 in Mesa, Ariz.
