President Donald Trump’s approval rating is the highest it’s been during his time in the White House, according to a new NBC News poll.
Forty-seven percent of the 1,000 registered voters said they approve of the work Trump has done as president, the survey, which was conducted between March 7-11, shows. The only other times his approval rating reached that mark was in February 2020 and October 2018.
NBC News said, however, that a little more than half of the respondents disapprove of Trump’s work.
Hart Research Associates and Public Opinion Strategies, the operators of the poll that was published Sunday by NBC News, also asked voters whether they approve or disapprove of Trump’s handling of several topics. The largest share of participants, 55%, said they support his work on border security and immigration, while 43% said they don’t, according to NBC News.
The next highest approval rating came for the president’s work on foreign policy. Forty-five percent of voters expressed support for it, while 53% didn’t, the results show. For the economy, 44% of respondents said they approved of Trump’s job. The support was greater than for the president’s work on inflation and the cost of living, as well as the war between Russia and Ukraine, NBC News said.
A CNN poll over the weekend showed that 57% of Democrats and Democratic-aligned independents say Democrats should work to stop the Republican agenda rather than trying to work with the party to get their ideas into legislation. This marks a shift from Trump’s first term, when a 2017 CNN poll found 74% of Democrats and Democratic leaners said the party should work with Republicans to advance their legislation. Just 23% pushed for a more combative approach in the 2017 poll.
Trump’s administration has tried to decrease the number of migrants entering the U.S., saying some of them are criminals and want to harm the country. Last month, there were more than 28,600 “encounters” between Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) and people at U.S. borders, the agency’s data shows. It was a 64% decrease from the amount in January and a 77% decrease from December, according to CBP.
Trump has also imposed tariffs on U.S.’s neighboring countries, claiming the nations are facilitating crime into the U.S. A global trade conflict has followed as the president extends taxes to countries around the world. He says the tariffs will make Americans richer.
Trump’s foreign policy also involves urging Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to concede some of the country’s resources in order for the U.S. to help in the war against Russia. He claims Ukraine is draining U.S. resources for an “endless” war.
