Former NHL forward Steve Downie went on a lengthy Twitter rant Friday night, taking aim at commentator and former Bruins coach Don Cherry.

Downie, who played parts of eight NHL seasons, criticized the culture of violence that he believes Cherry perpetuates through his “Rock 'Em Sock 'Em” series of videos.

In response to some of his tweets, a fan tweeted an animated gif of Downie bodychecking Penguins forward Dean McAmmond in 2007, a play that left McAmmond concussed and Downie suspended for 20 games. Downie retweeted the gif and then spoke about his regrets from the play, saying, “I still think about what I caused him to go through.”

Coyotes RW Shane Doan became the seventh active player to reach 400 goals when he scored in the second period of a 4-1 loss to the Maple Leafs on Friday night. Doan, 40, also hit a milestone by playing in his 1,500th NHL game, becoming the 17th player to do so. News services
