President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday delivered a wide-ranging political address, during which he called out “transgender insanity” in the United States.

At a Turning Point USA event in Arizona, the soon-to-be 47th president touched on several key goals for his incoming administration, including economic growth and mass deportation of illegal migrants. He also referenced so-called “wokeness,” a movement championed by the political left to advance social justice. This, he said, is degrading the country.

“And woke has to stop,” he said. “Because along with everything else, it’s destroying our country. We’re going to stop woke.”

One such destructive policy, Trump said, is local school systems’ openness to certain topics related to transgender identities and critical race theory. He vowed to remove such aspects of the school curriculum.

“We will get critical race theory and transgender insanity the hell out of our schools and we’re going to get it out of our schools very fast,” Trump said, earning cheers from the audience. “I will defend religious liberty, I will restore free speech and I will defend the right to keep and bear arms.”

The promise comes as Trump and his allies continue discussing possible abolishment of the U.S. Department of Education. That is part of a larger plan to cut government waste and bureaucracy.

Transgender policies have become controversial in the wake of Democrats’ defeat on Election Day. Some lawmakers, such as Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., are now calling for the party to reevaluate its messaging surrounding the hot-button topic.

“You can have a debate about this issue and that’s really my core point,” Moulton said in November. “It’s that we need to debate contentious issues without just being shut down. This is a problem that we have in politics today. We can’t as Democrats feel that we can debate some of these contentious issues at the risk of offending people.”

Moulton added he is not deterred by those who organized protests outside his office over his stance, and insisted he is not “anti-trans.”

“I’m not afraid of protests, people protest out in front of my office all the time because they think I’m too pro-Israel,” he said. “I’m not anti-trans either. In fact I have a strong record of supporting trans people including trans kids.

“For some reason because of some orthodox litmus test in our party we’re not even supposed to entertain the idea,” Moulton added. “I’m just saying let’s have a debate.”
