Bel Air’s Newberry Cafe and Bakery is expanding to Havre de Grace with its new location in the former Goll’s Bakery storefront on North Washington Street.

Newberry Cafe opened its Bel Air location in the former Bel Air Bakery in 2017 after the Bel Air Bakery ended 60 years of service there about two years prior. Continuing to offer many of Bel Air Bakery’s recipes, Newberry Cafe expanded the menu to include coffee, tea, doughnuts and other pastries.

Owner Nichol Barbes said the Havre de Grace location, which has a pink-and-white storefront with large windows, is undergoing renovations to accommodate the Newberry Cafe and Bakery. An apartment above the storefront is also undergoing updates.

She said she is excited to become a part of the town of Havre de Grace.

“That is really what I love about it — to be the town bakery,” Barbes said. “I never want to be a drive-thru or in a strip mall. I think this is a great fit for us.”

Downtown Havre de Grace has been the focus of a large-scale restoration project that replaced infrastructure, light fixtures, roadways and expanded popular sidewalks in the downtown area.

Barbes said the renovations have rejuvenated the town, which excites her as it reminds her of when Newberry originally opened its Bel Air location.

“I feel like it is a super great time to be there because it is like a turnover of generations, which I feel like happened at the Bel Air location when new places started to open up,” Barbes said. “The town was being rejuvenated around the same time we opened there and that’s what is happening here.”

With the expanded sidewalks on North Washington Street, Newberry Cafe will offer outdoor seating. The family-run bakery operates Wednesdays through Sundays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., which Barbes said could change at the Havre de Grace location, depending on customer traffic.

“We have to see what works but we are considering opening more days, potentially seven days instead of five, but we have to see how it goes because we don’t know what the town traffic will be like,” Barbes said.

Barbes noted that the Havre de Grace location will be open before the end of the year, possibly as soon as September.
