Cummings leads No. 1 Terps women over William & Mary
No. 12 Greyhounds women fall to No. 3 Syracuse, 16-6
Taylor Cummings (McDonogh) had a career-high five caused turnovers, scored four goals and added two assists and four ground balls as the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team defeated William & Mary, 19-7, on Sunday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.
Zoe Stukenberg (Marriotts Ridge) also scored four goals while adding one assist. Megan Whittle (McDonogh) had a hat trick while Caroline Wannen added one goal and three assists.
Whittle started the scoring just 58 seconds into game to help the Terps (1-0) take a 5-1 lead. The Tribe (0-1) scored three of the next four goals to cut the deficit to 7-4, but Cummings scored three of the next four goals and Stukenberg added two as Maryland took a 12-4 lead into halftime.
Theo Kwas added two goals in the last six minutes. Emily Kift started in goal and made one save to earn the win. Megan Taylor (Glenelg) played the second half and finished with two saves.
Maryland outshot William & Mary, 32-12, and held a 16-9 advantage in ground balls.
Maddy Blakeman, Emily Clark, Frankie Kamely and Taylor VanThof scored one goal each for Loyola, which won just of 3 of 25 draws.
Halle Majorana scored five goals and Kayla Treanor added four for Syracuse.
Bailey Mathis won the opening draw for the Greyhounds and Clark scored the first goal less than three minutes into the game.
The Orange answered with a free-position goal from Majorana, but Blakeman regained the lead for the Greyhounds, 2-1.
Syracuse then scored a two goals to take a 3-2 lead and Treanor won the next 10 draws to help the Orange build an 11-3 halftime advantage.
Syracuse scored three straight to begin the second half before Tabasso's goal with 19:37 to go.
The Orange added another pair of goals to lead 16-4 with 11:56 left before Tabasso and Kamley scored two of the final three goals.
Molly Wolf (Bryn Mawr) made five saves, while Kady Glynn made her college debut and had her first career save.
Nation men
After leading 9-3 at the half and 11-6 after three quarters, Duke extended the lead to 13-8 on Jack Bruckner's goal with 5:48 left in the fourth quarter.
Lehigh (1-1) then scored three goals in the final 1:06 with Tristan Rai scoring the final goal with 24 seconds left.
Duke's Kyle Rowe, who won 18 of 27 draws, sealed the win by securing the ensuing restart.
Duke's Chad Cohan scored two goals and Rowe finished with a game-high 13 ground balls and added his first goal of the season that ended a 3-0 Lehigh run with 10:33 to play in the fourth quarter.
Rai finished with four goals for Lehigh.
Nation women
The Tar Heels tied a school record with 52 shots, outshooting the Aztecs (0-2) by a 52-14 margin. North Carolina also had 31 ground balls to San Diego State's 15 and won 23 of 30 draws.
Hendrick scored four goals for the third game in a row in her return from ACL surgery that forced her to miss the second half of last season.
Caylee Waters started in goal for Carolina and played the first half, allowing one goal and making two saves. Megan Ward played the second half and allowed six goals while making three saves.
Caroline Margolis also added four goals for Boston College.
Sarah Mannelly scored 1:16 into the game to give the Eagles the lead; they never trailed the rest of the game. Boston College held an 8-0 lead after 17 minutes and led 10-4 at halftime.
