Navy’s Joe Varello won the faceoff against his brother Danny of Syracuse with 9 seconds left, raced down the field and scored the game-winner with less than a second left to lift No. 14 Mids to a 13-12 comeback victory over No. 9 Orange in men’s lacrosse Saturday.

Visiting Navy scored twice over the final 10 seconds to win and made a compelling case for itself for a postseason berth in the NCAA Division I tournament.

Mids’ Jack Ray scored his fourth goal of the game to tie the score at 12-12.

Navy improved to 9-4 and Syracuse fell to 7-5.

“Congratulations to Navy, to come in here, go behind by a couple of goals and then win it like they did, my hat’s off to them,” Syracuse coach John Desko said. “Joe [Varello] did a great job at the X and was rewarded late with a goal, so that’s something he’ll probably remember for a long time.”

No. 7 Johns Hopkins 10, Michigan 9: Kyle Marr scored his fourth goal and the game-winner with 31 seconds left to lift the visiting Blue Jays (9-3, 3-1 Big Ten) over the Wolverines (7-6, 0-4).

St. Joseph’s 14, Mount St. Mary’s 7: The host Hawks (9-3, 5-0 Northeast Conference) used a 7-0 run in the first half to take control.

Chris DiPretoro and Matt Haggerty each scored twice for the Mount (4-9, 1-4).

Salisbury 17, Frostburg State 2: Griffin Moroney had a career-high six goals to lead the host Sea Gulls (13-3, 6-1 Capital Athletic Conference) past the Bobcats (9-8, 4-4).

Women

No. 1 Stony Brook 22, UMBC 7: The host Seawolves (15-0, 6-0 America East) broke a 5-5 tie with the Retrievers (10-6, 2-4) by going on a 13-0 run.

No. 8 Loyola Maryland 20, Colgate 8: Livy Rosenzweig had a goal and eight assists to lead the visiting Greyhounds (12-3, 8-0 Patriot League) past the Raiders (9-6, 4-4).

No. 11 Navy 19, Lafayette 9: Jenna Collins (River Hill) had six goals and Kelly Larkin had five goals and five assists to lead the Mids (13-3, 7-1 Patriot) past the host Leopards (4-11, 1-6).

Salisbury 16, Frostburg State 4: Dana King and Lydia McNulty (Broadneck) had four goals each to lead the Sea Gulls (15-1, 7-0 CAC) past the host Bobcats (5-10-1, 2-6).
