The JCPenney store in the Annapolis Mall was one of many across the country slated to close May 12 because of financial troubles, but is now set to stay open, according to the company.
A JCPenney spokesperson confirmed the change to the Capital Gazette on Monday after several going-out-of-business signs were removed from the storefront and replaced with a now-hiring sign. The store employs around 74 workers, according to a Maryland Work Adjustment and Retraining Notification that was posted when layoffs were announced.
The store has extended its lease and will stay open through August, with negotiations with mall owner Centennial over additional time continuing.
“At this time, the store liquidation event has been stopped. We are optimistic that we can come to an agreement that will suit all parties involved, and that JCPenney can continue to serve our loyal customers in the Annapolis area for years to come,” the department store wrote in a statement. This is the only location in Maryland that was going to be closed. It is unclear if the other stores across the country will also reverse course.
The Forever 21 in the mall, however, is not as lucky. It will close Tuesday, according to a store employee.
