A Florida elections worker is out of a job after containers of completed ballots fell onto a road from the truck they were driving.
Dashcam video of the incident circulating on social media this week shows a car swerving to avoid objects lying in the middle of a busy road. The driver then takes the containers into their vehicle, showing labels reading “official election materials.”
The driver later took the materials to the police department, according to officials.
The Miami-Dade County Elections Department issued a statement on the incident, saying the worker responsible was fired due to the department’s “zero tolerance” policy.
“The incident that occurred was due to human error,” the department wrote. “The worker forgot to lock the back of the truck, and as they drove off, one sealed bin and one sealed bag fell out, containing already voted ballots from early voting.”
Elections staff said they examined the containers and found neither had been tampered with or damaged.
“While unintentional, the Elections Department has a zero tolerance for error, and therefore the employee was terminated,” the department added.
The handling of ballots is undergoing intense scrutiny as early voting takes place across the country. The Department of Homeland Security issued a warning to law enforcement in Washington state and Oregon last week, advising of “threat factors” facing ballot boxes. Boxes in Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash., were set on fire this week.
Phoenix authorities last week announced the arrest of an individual accused of lighting a USPS mailbox containing election ballots on fire. However, Sgt. Rob Scherer of the city fire department’s arson investigation task force said he had no reason to believe the attack was politically motivated.
“There was never any … information that led us to believe that this was maybe election related or anything like that,” he said. “We never got any hint or any detail that told us this might be.”
