A woman has been arrested after admitting to shooting and killing her father during an argument over a lock on a door to their home, the Baltimore Police Department said.

Shanelle Reed, 37, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

On Jan. 18, around 6:55 p.m., police responded to the 5600 block of Groveland Avenue for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, police found a 59-year-old man, later identified as Brian Reed, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Brian Reed was transported to a local hospital for treatment but died a short time later, authorities said.

After an investigation, police reported that Shanelle Reed had shot and killed her father during an argument. She was taken into custody at the scene.

According to the police affidavit, Shanelle Reed locked Brian Reed out of a home and called 911 to report that her father had assaulted her. By the time police arrived, the elder Reed had already been shot.

Authorities recovered a gun, a magazine containing 40 caliber rounds, a bucket of 40 caliber ammunition, and two 40 caliber shell casings.

Police said Shanelle Reed provided a written statement, saying that an argument turned physical with her father over a lock on the door. She told police that she went upstairs to get her gun while Brian Reed was attempting to unscrew the deadbolt.

β€œI shot towards him, which looked to be his left thigh,” Shanelle Reed wrote in her statement to police. β€œHe seemed to hesitate while still working on the door, but then, he eventually left the house, and I shot towards him once more and called 911 to let them know.”

Shanelle Reed was taken to the Central Booking Intake Facility.
