Acme Smoked Fish Corp., in collaboration with Costco, has initiated a voluntary recall of certain packages of Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon. The recall is being conducted with an abundance of caution due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
The product in question is Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon, with the item number 1267000. The affected packages were bought between Oct. 9 and Oct. 13 and belong to lot number 8512801270.
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Healthy individuals may experience only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. However, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
Consumers who have bought the affected product are advised not to consume it. Instead, they should return it to Costco for a full refund.
Eduardo Carbajosa, chief executive officer of Acme Smoked Fish Corp., expressed regret over the incident and assured that immediate corrective steps have been taken to prevent such issues in the future.
