Residents of North Baltimore will soon have a new place to get barbecue and a beer.

George Marsh, the former head chef and butcher at the now-closed Parts & Labor, is opening a bar and smokehouse on the 5800 block of York Road. Heritage Smokehouse will be just blocks away from the Senator Theatre and Belvedere Square, in the city’s Govans neighborhood, Marsh said.

An opening date has not been set for the restaurant, which is still mid-construction. “I thought we could possibly open in July,” Marsh said. “I’d love to be open before the holidays.”

Marsh, who also began the animal butchery program at Woodberry Kitchen, said the eatery will specialize in wood-smoked meats with locally grown sides such as heirloom tomatoes and corn in the summer and sweet potatoes in the fall.

“There will be things reminiscent of the work I did at Parts & Labor,” Marsh said of the new restaurant, but added that Heritage Smokehouse will be more casual and with lower prices. “I really have always been trying to get away from the pretentious side of food.”

The father of two hopes the new restaurant, which will feature a bar with retro arcade games, will become a popular spot for diners with children. “One of our kids is special needs… Going out to eat can be a struggle,” he said. When a restaurant makes it clear that kids are welcome, he said, “We can finally relax.”

Remington’s Parts & Labor closed in 2018. The Howard Street space, a former auto repair shop, has been renamed the Tire Shop and is hosting pop-up events while building owner Seawall Development finds a permanent tenant.
