A dramatic moment captured on a police officer’s body camera is a reminder of the bravery and teamwork among first responders.

The footage shows police officers and Good Samaritans rushing to rescue a firefighter who became trapped in the aftermath of a house explosion in Christopher, Illinois, on April 3.

The firefighter was standing near the front door of a burning home when, in an instant, a powerful blast rocked the property. Authorities said the explosion caused the front porch to collapse, pinning the firefighter beneath the debris.

Police officers, fellow firefighters and nearby residents are seen on the bodycam video running toward the wreckage, repeatedly shouting, “Come on! Let’s get him out!” The video shows first responders and a shirtless bystander lifting a section of the collapsed roof to free the firefighter.

The firefighter was safely pulled from the wreckage because of the quick response. Miraculously, officials said the firefighter did not sustain major injuries and is now recovering.

In a heartfelt message posted on social media, the Christopher Police Department praised the courage of everyone involved.

“We are thankful for all of our firefighters and first responders! They have a very dangerous job, and today highlighted the dangers they face all too often. We are grateful that no one sustained major injuries,” the department wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Christopher firefighter for a fast and speedy recovery, and also with the family that lost their home during this tragedy.”

The home was deemed a total loss, but the community’s heroic response turned what could have been a tragedy into a survival story.
